What does “Anesti” mean?
When we first came up with the concept of a group to promote education about Orthodoxy, we knew that an important part of that was the name we chose. Generally, the name given to a group reflects it’s underlying focus.
So, what is this group all about?
Anesti (pronounced ‘ah-nés-ty’) comes from the greeting that Orthodox say when we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ at Easter. An Orthodox will say to someone, ‘Christ is Risen!’, and they respond, ‘Truly He is Risen!’. In the language of the New Testament, this is said as ‘Χριστός Ανέστη (Christos Anesti)!’ and ‘Αληθώς Ανέστη (Alithos Anesti)!’. So, we can say that our group name means ‘Is Risen’.
It is this declaration of what is fundamental to our faith - that Christ is risen from the dead - that is our groups focus, and our desire to communicate everything that this simple proclamation means to everyone - both by word and by action.
